SYMPTOMS
========

Calling the QueryDosDevice() API with an incorrect device name causes a
blue stop screen to appear. An unhandled kernel exception error is
generated in NTOSKRNL.EXE.

CAUSE
=====

If you use "C:\" instead of "C:" for the device name, the object manager
module of Windows NT incorrectly releases memory holding references to the
present drive. After several calls to QueryDosDevice(), the blue stop
screen appears.

RESOLUTION
==========

Use the correct device name ("C:").

STATUS
======

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and
Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem was corrected in
the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced
Server version 3.1. For information on obtaining the Service Pack,
